SDWO (Denmark 29/10/2010) Over the past two years, the Danish pirate effort explored the coast of Africa was not quite as effective as hoped for.

At least not if you ask the local coast guards in the autonomous territory of Somaliland, which says that illegal activities continue.

"Your efforts have no apparent effect when you just release them. If Denmark was simply giving a little bit of all the money you spend on your warships, one would see an immediate impact," said Isse Mahad Adbi, who heads the Coast Guard in
Somaliland.

The international force is tourism And he is backed by one of the other coast guards.

"To be honest, we see the international force as a kind of tourists. What they do has no proper effect," says Hussein Ismael Wascais.

The Danish pirate action has over two years caught 145 pirates, but only five of them were prosecuted, while local coastguards have caught more than 300 pirates of three years - and with very few boats and equipment. And many of the pirates have received up to 20 years imprisonment.
